Float

Shares generally available for public trading, excluding some restricted or closely held shares depending on definition.

What it means

Float differs from total shares outstanding. It matters for liquidity, index rules, and market-structure context because not every issued share is equally available to trade.

Example

A founder-held restricted block may be included in shares outstanding but excluded from some float calculations.

What not to infer

Float does not explain company value or price movement by itself.
